Reusable Water Bottles
In this day and age, reducing our waste is a sustainable habit that has become essential. If we set our minds to it, with small changes, we can make a big contribution to environmental sustainability. One example is the use of reusable water bottles.
When we buy plastic bottles, we generate waste that can end up in the sea and in nature. Have you ever heard of plastic islands? Some are as big as the Iberian Peninsula and are formed thanks to ocean currents that drag the garbage we generate. It is not a surprise to find used plastic containers lying in the mountains, on the beach, in the countryside…
Recycling is sometimes not enough either, because we generate tons of garbage and the change comes from being aware of our consumption and rejecting products such as single-use plastics.
In relation to the consumption of plastic bottles, you can do your bit by switching to reusable water bottles.
In English, the concept to go is very widespread, referring to “to go” containers. But not only is it a convenient format, but it is also an environmentally friendly option.
Why is it important to use reusable water bottles?
Although a few years ago the aim was to encourage recycling, over time it has been proven that it is much more useful (and necessary!) to reuse and reduce consumption (the so-called other R’s of sustainability). Furthermore, we must start from the premise that our activity will always have an impact on the environment. Therefore, what we must achieve is to minimize this impact as much as possible.
In the case of water bottles, recycling is a very obvious impact. We consume huge quantities of plastic water bottles which, in order to recycle them, require resources and energy that again leave a footprint on the environment. The problem can be addressed if, instead of buying hundreds of plastic bottles that we have to recycle to buy an equal amount in the future, we get a reusable water bottle that we can use over and over again.
The good thing about these water bottles is that they are plastic-free. Materials such as metal and glass are used to produce them, and they are much more resistant and harmless to health. In fact, one of the advantages of using these water bottles is that they last a long time and can be used as many times as necessary without changing the taste of the water. In addition, their materials do not allow substances that can put your health at risk to be transferred to the liquid.
And, in case you are still not convinced, using this type of bottle means significant savings for your pocket. Double savings, in your economy and in the amount of waste for our planet.
Why reject plastic and what are the best materials for reusable water bottles?
When you buy a plastic bottle you may think of the convenience of carrying it with you and that when you no longer need it, you can throw it away in the yellow garbage can. However, the materials from which they are made take more than 400 years to decompose. The environmental impact is very large if you compare it with the bottle’s useful life; practically, use and throw away. It doesn’t pay off!
Also, did you know that it is not recommended to reuse plastic bottles? Refilling these containers with water to continue using them can be harmful to health, as they contain chemical components that can contaminate the water. One of these components is bisphenol A, also called BPA, which can pass into food or beverages under certain conditions. This material is very difficult to eliminate and, if it accumulates in the body, can cause serious health problems.
The most recommended materials for water bottles are stainless steel or glass, or some high-quality food-safe plastics. These materials are free of toxic substances and do not react with food.
